Laughing-Stock
The Trinity is no laughing-stock: the light of faith can help us understand the mysterious nature of the trinity.
With our reason we can know that God exists through the beauty and wonder of creation. But we can only know that God is the Blessed Trinity through faith.
St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) observes insightfully:
Trying to prove the Trinity by reason would injure faith by denying the surpassing dignity of its subject-matter, and making it a laughing-stock to unbelievers, who would think our belief relied on such unconvincing arguments (McDermott, Summa Theologiae: A Concise Translation, p. 71).
Yes, reason is a powerful, potent light. Yes, faith is a light, more powerful, more potent.
We should thank God for our faith and ask the Lord to deepen it still more.
Can we sense the importance of the Blessed Trinity for our relationships?
God is a communion of three distinct persons in love:
The Father expresses himself, and the Son is begotten.
Their love is so intense that it is the Holy Spirit - the Gift.
We don't like loneliness. We crave love - communion. But will these relationships lead to a loss of personal identity?
The Trinity of Love guarantees company and authentic identity.
We are secure and set free:
The Trinity is no laughing-stock, but a mystery of light.
Amen.
