The Gospel of John has seven ‘I AM’ statements. Today we encounter:
I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14).
The Church, accompanied by 4,000 years of wisdom (from Abraham & Sarah until now), has developed Catechisms for our benefit.
They follow the structure of Creed, Code, Cult. This is simply a reflection and annunciation of Jesus’ teaching:
Jesus is the Truth. We have a Creed (beliefs).
Jesus is the Life. We have a Cult (sacraments).
Jesus is the Way. We have a Code (morality).
We believe Jesus to be the Son of Man and the Son of God – truly human and divine – the 12 articles of the Creed.
We celebrate his life with the seven sacraments – which accompany us from birth to death.
We live his life with the Ten Commandments and the Eight Beatitudes – challenging, yet satisfying.
Our most recent Catechism (1994) is possibly – probably – the best we have ever produced:
God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness, freely created us to share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to us (CCC 1).
Amen.
