Compline
200 Words: Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, according to your promise, because my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all the nations to see.
The day is divided into morning, evening and night.
Our rich spiritual tradition offers us morning, evening and night prayer. Beautifully presented, they feature psalms, bible readings, canticles, prayers of intercession.
At the end of the day, we can pray night prayer. It goes by the name ‘Compline,’ meaning ‘complete hour.’
Compline is perfect for couples and families to pray.
Our life consists of a series of days, sometimes many, other times not. Whatever the length of our lives, we have the opportunity to finish each day well.
Compline is simple and quick, suitable just before we retire for sleep. Truth be known, it probably aids sleep.
Compline contains the beautiful canticle of Simeon:
Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, according to your promise, because my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all the nations to see. A light to enlighten the gentiles, and give glory to your people Israel (Luke 2).
See the night as symbolic of our death. It is appropriate, therefore, that we complete each day with prayer.
We ask the Lord to let us go in peace, having experienced his healing salvation, giving glory to God.
Amen.
